Snapped cable or a door that grinds?

Garage door cable repair is a job I do the same day more often than not. If a cable has snapped and the door is hanging crooked, or you can see frayed strands near the bottom bracket, stop using the door and call me at (619) 930-7869. The cables carry the door's full weight from the springs, and a damaged one can let go without warning.

Rollers and hinges usually fail more slowly. The door gets louder, it shudders at the same spot every time, or a hinge cracks at the bend. Catching those early is cheaper than waiting for a roller to jump the track or a cracked hinge to split a panel.

What are you seeing or hearing?

Pick the closest. Or text me a photo of the bottom corner of the door.

Frayed or rusty cable

Broken strands near the bottom bracket. It's on borrowed time.

Door hanging crooked

One cable snapped or slipped off its drum. The door is hanging on one side.

Grinding or squealing

Rollers with worn-out bearings, or bare steel wheels running dry in the track.

Cracked or bent hinge

Usually on the top or middle sections, where the door bends most.

Door shudders at one spot

A flat-spotted roller or a loose hinge catching as it passes the curve.

What I check first

  1. 1

    Diagnose

Both cables end to end, the drums, the bottom brackets, every roller and hinge, the track and the springs. A broken cable usually has a reason, and it's often a tired spring or a rusted bracket.

  2. 2

    Explain

I show you what's worn, what's broken and what still has life in it. Then you get one price before I start, with the optional items listed separately.

  3. 3

    Repair

New cables seated on the drums with even tension, rollers and hinges replaced, the door balanced, lubed and run through full cycles until it's quiet and straight.

What I replace

The parts that carry and guide the door.

Lift cables

Always replaced in pairs so both sides stretch and wear the same.

Drums and bottom brackets

Checked on every cable job. Rusted brackets are a common cause of snapped cables.

Rollers

Sealed-bearing nylon rollers for a quieter door, or steel where the door needs it.

Hinges

Cracked or bent hinges replaced with the right number for each section.

Is it the part or the whole door?

Cables, rollers and hinges are wear parts. Replacing them is normal maintenance on a door that's a few years old, not a sign the door is failing. A full set of new rollers can make an old door sound years younger.

If a cable snapped because the spring above it is also worn, I'll tell you and quote both. If rollers keep wearing out on one side, the track may be out of line, and I'll fix that too so you aren't buying rollers every year. A new door only comes into the conversation if the panels themselves are cracked or rotted through.

Spring snapped? I can usually come today or tomorrow.

Leave the cables to me

Garage door cables are connected to springs under heavy tension. Loosening a cable bracket or the drum set screw on a door that's down can release that tension all at once. People get hurt doing this, even with the right tools.

The bottom brackets, where the cable attaches to the door, are under the same load. Never remove them. Rollers and hinges are less dangerous, but on most doors the bottom roller sits in the same bracket as the cable, so I'd rather do the whole corner myself.

Cable and roller questions

Why replace both cables if only one broke?

They're the same age and carried the same load. A new cable next to an old one stretches differently and can make the door hang unevenly. Doing both is a small extra cost and saves a second visit.

Nylon or steel rollers?

For most homes, sealed-bearing nylon rollers. They're much quieter, and they don't need much lubrication. Steel rollers are tough but noisier, and low-grade ones with open bearings wear out fast.

Why does my cable keep rusting?

Moisture sitting at the bottom of the door, salt air near the bay, or a bottom seal that lets water in. I'll look at the seal and the bracket too, so the new cable lasts.

Can a cable break without the spring breaking?

Yes. Rust, fraying where it rubs the track, or a cable that jumped the drum can all fail on their own. But I always check the spring, because a weak spring puts extra strain on the cables.

How do I know if my rollers are worn?

Look at them with the door down. Wobbly wheels, cracked nylon, flat spots or bearings you can hear grinding all mean it's time. If the door is louder than it used to be, rollers are a likely reason.
