Genie garage door opener repair in San Diego
Genie is built differently from LiftMaster and Chamberlain, with its own drives, parts and remotes. I work on it regularly and carry the common parts.

Common Genie problems
What it's doing, and what it usually is.Motor runs but the door doesn't move
On screw drives, often a worn carriage or drive coupling. On chain and belt units, a gear or trolley.
Screw drive grinding or chattering
A dry screw rail, or a carriage that's worn from running dry for years.
Door reverses or won't close
Sensors out of line or dirty, or travel limits that have drifted out of place.
Remote stopped working
Genie Intellicode remotes have to be programmed to the opener. A dead battery or lost code is common.
Light flashes a pattern
Many Genie units flash a code that points to the fault. I read it before I touch anything.
Repair or replace?
Genie is made by The Genie Company, and its openers are their own design. Genie is known for screw-drive openers, where a long threaded rod moves the door, alongside chain and belt models. The parts aren't interchangeable with LiftMaster or Chamberlain, so I keep Genie parts separate on the truck.
If the unit is under roughly twelve years old and the fault is a carriage, coupling, sensor, remote or board that's still available, I repair it. If parts for your model are discontinued or the motor is worn out, I'll recommend a replacement. When I replace, I install a LiftMaster chain or belt drive with battery backup. Your Genie remotes won't carry over, so I program new ones as part of the job.
What I check first
- 1
Diagnose
I lift the door by hand to check the springs and balance, read any flash code, then check the drive, carriage, sensors, limits and remotes.
- 2
Explain
I show you the worn part, tell you whether Genie still makes it for your model, and give you the price before I start.
- 3
Repair
Part replaced, the screw or rail lubed if it's a screw drive, limits and force reset, sensors aligned and remotes reprogrammed. Then a full test.

Genie questions
Do you repair Genie screw-drive openers?
Yes. Screw drives have fewer moving parts than chain drives, but the screw rail needs lubrication and the carriage wears if it runs dry. Those are fixable on most units.
Can I use a LiftMaster remote on my Genie?
Not directly. Genie openers use their own Intellicode remotes. Some universal remotes and car buttons can be programmed to a Genie. I'll tell you which will work with your model.
Why is my Genie so loud?
On a screw drive, a dry screw rail is the usual culprit. On chain units, a loose chain or worn sprocket. A tune-up often quiets it down a lot.
Are Genie parts still available?
For most models from the last decade or so, yes. For much older units, some parts are discontinued. I'll check before I quote and tell you if a repair isn't realistic.
Do you work for Genie?
No. I'm independent, a licensed contractor (CSLB #1136749). I repair Genie openers, and when one needs replacing, I install LiftMaster.
How long does a Genie repair take?
Most are done in one visit, usually an hour or two once I'm there, including resetting the limits and testing the safety reverse.
Faster by phone. This works too.
