Old door past saving?

New garage door installation in San Diego starts with a visit, not a catalog price. Call me at (619) 930-7869 and I'll come measure the opening, the headroom and the side room, look at the framing and the opener, and walk you through the options that actually fit your garage.

I'm not going to push a new door on you if the old one just needs a spring or a cable. But if the panels are rotted, cracked or folded, if it's an old wood door so heavy it wears out springs and openers, or if you simply want something quieter, better insulated or better looking, a new door is the right call.

When a new door makes sense

Any of these, and it's worth getting a quote alongside the repair.

Rotted or split panels

Common at the bottom of older wood doors. Once the wood goes soft, it doesn't hold hardware.

Panels folded or creased

After a car hit it. Single panels for older doors are often no longer made.

Too heavy for its springs

Old one-piece and wood doors that keep breaking springs and opener gears.

Hot

An insulated steel door with good seals makes a real difference if you use the space.

Looks tired from the street

The garage door is a big part of the front of the house. A new one changes it fast.

How a new door goes

  1. 1

    Measure

Width, height, headroom, side room and backroom, plus the framing, the floor and the opener. Those numbers decide which doors and track options fit.

  2. 2

    Choose

We go through material, insulation, style, windows and color. You get a written price for the door you pick, installed, with haul-away. If you're in an HOA, I'll give you the specs for approval.

  3. 3

    Install

Old door and springs taken down safely, new track, springs and door installed, balanced and tested with your opener. The old door leaves on my truck.

What I install

Residential sectional doors, sized to your opening.

Insulated steel doors

Low upkeep, quieter and better at holding heat out. The most common pick.

Non-insulated steel doors

Simple and durable for a detached garage or a tight budget.

Carriage-house and wood-look styles

For Craftsman and Spanish-style homes where the look matters.

New LiftMaster opener

Installed at the same time if the old one is worn or too loud.

Repair first, replace when it's time

Most doors I see need a repair, not a new door, and I'll tell you so. A broken spring, a snapped cable or worn rollers don't mean the door is finished. If a repair makes sense, I'll quote that first.

A new door is worth it when the door itself has failed: rotted or split wood, steel panels that are folded or rusted through, or an old door so heavy it keeps breaking the parts around it. It's also worth it when the garage is part of your living space and the old door lets in heat, noise and dust.

I install doors from Clopay and First UDT. Both make residential doors in a range of styles, insulation levels and colors. I'll show you what fits your opening and your budget, and I won't upsell you into options you don't need.

Spring snapped? I can usually come today or tomorrow.

Why I take the old door down myself

Removing an old garage door is more dangerous than putting up a new one. The springs on the old door are still holding tension, and old extension springs without safety cables can snap without warning. Taking a door apart in the wrong order is how people get hurt.

Please don't unbolt the old door, its springs or its brackets before I get there. I release the spring tension properly, take the door down section by section and haul everything away.

Cost guide

What affects the price

A new door has more variables than any repair. Here's what changes the price, so you know what I'll ask about.

  • Size and material
  • Insulation level
  • Style and windows
  • Opener at the same time
  • Haul-away and HOA approval

New door questions

How long does an installation take?

Most single residential doors are done in one day, including removing the old door, installing the new one, balancing it and connecting the opener.

How long until my door arrives?

Doors are ordered to your measurements and the options you pick, so there's a wait between the estimate and the install. I'll give you the install date once the door is ordered.

Do I need HOA approval?

If you're in an HOA, probably. Many have rules on color, style and windows. I'll give you the model, color and spec sheet to submit, and I'll wait for your go-ahead before ordering.

Is an insulated door worth it?

If the garage is attached, has a room over it, or you use it as a workshop or gym, yes. It's quieter and keeps the garage noticeably cooler on hot afternoons inland. For a detached garage used only for storage, a non-insulated door is fine.

Do you take the old door away?

Yes. The old door, springs, track and hardware leave on my truck. You don't have to arrange a dump run.

Can you match the style of my house?

Usually. Carriage-house and wood-look steel doors suit older Craftsman and Spanish-style homes, and plain raised-panel doors suit most ranch and tract homes. I'll bring options that fit.
