Garage door questions I get every week
Straight answers. If yours isn't here, call or text and I'll answer it in person.
Estimates
Is the estimate really free?
Yes. No trip fee, no diagnostic fee. I come out, look at the door, tell you what's wrong and what it costs. If you say no, I leave and you owe nothing.
Why don't you give prices on the website or over the phone?
Because every door is different and a wrong number helps nobody. I measure, then I give you one price that doesn't change.
Do you charge more for same-day service?
No. Same price whenever I come.
Scheduling
How fast can you come?
Central San Diego, usually the same day. East County and South Bay, same or next day. North County, usually the next day, in an afternoon window. I give you a window and I call before I leave.
What are your hours?
Seven days a week, 8 AM to 8 PM. Leave a message outside those hours and I call back first thing.
Do I need to be home?
Yes, for the estimate. I want you to see what I found before I quote it.
Springs
Can I open the door with a broken spring?
Please don't. The door weighs 150 to 300 pounds without the spring. Leave it down, unplug the opener and call.
Should I replace both springs?
If one of a pair broke, the other is the same age. I recommend both and quote it both ways.
How long do springs last?
They're rated in cycles, commonly around 10,000 on a standard spring. At four cycles a day that's about seven years. Heat and an unbalanced door shorten it. More in how long springs last.
Openers
Which openers do you install?
LiftMaster, all with battery backup: chain drive, belt drive, heavy-duty for big wood doors, or side-mount. The last two are special order. For garages too tight for a standard rail, Marantec.
Do you repair other brands?
Chamberlain, Genie, Craftsman and most others. If parts are discontinued, I'll tell you up front.
Why does my door reverse when it's almost closed?
Usually the sensors or the travel limits. Sometimes the door is binding and the opener is protecting itself. See why a garage door won't close, or call.
Warranty and license
What's the warranty?
One year on parts, 30 days on labor, in writing on your invoice.
What about new doors and openers?
Manufacturer warranties pass to you.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes to both. License CSLB #1136749, C-61/D28; look it up at cslb.ca.gov.
