Garage doors in Kensington
Kensington Park went on sale in 1910 and the first houses were Craftsman, but most of the neighborhood filled in during the late 1920s, when Spanish Revival was the style everyone in San Diego wanted. Richard Requa set the look for Kensington Heights. For garage door repair in Kensington, call me at (619) 930-7869.
The ground shapes everything here. The city describes Kensington as a narrow peninsula with steep slopes on three sides, and a lot of that slope is open space. Streets curve to follow it, so some lots drop away behind the house and the garage ends up below street level, set forward on the lot, or under part of the home.
Many of these houses still have a detached garage out back, and plenty of the doors on them are wood, some of them custom. Wood doors are heavy and they need the spring sized for that weight. Kensington shares ZIP 92116 with Normal Heights.

What I check first
- 1
Diagnose
I look at the whole door, not just the broken part: springs, cables, drums, rollers, hinges, track and the opener. On a spring job I measure the old spring: wire size, length, inside diameter and wind.
- 2
Explain
I show you what broke and why, then give you the price before I touch anything. Say no and I pack up. No trip fee, no pressure.

Repair
A spring sized to your door, from the truck. I balance the door, run it through full cycles, reset the opener's force limits and lube the moving parts before I leave.
Why Kensington doors wear out
Weight. Solid wood and carriage-style doors weigh a lot more than a plain steel door, and repainting over the years adds to it. If the spring was sized for the door when it was new, it's probably short of what it needs now, and the opener ends up lifting the difference.
Slope. A garage cut into a hillside often has a floor that isn't level, so the door lands on one corner first. Over time that twists the bottom section, wears one cable faster than the other, and leaves a gap where leaves and critters get in.
Spring snapped? I can usually come today or tomorrow.

Kensington questions
Can you work on a historic wood door without changing how it looks?
Usually, yes. Springs, cables, rollers and openers are behind the door. I'll keep the face of the door as it is and tell you if any wood needs a carpenter.
My garage is below the street and the ceiling is low. Can I still have an opener?
Usually, yes. I carry low-headroom track and hardware, and I'll tell you which opener setup fits. For the tightest spaces, I install Marantec. On a standard door, a side-mount (jackshaft) LiftMaster frees the ceiling and runs quiet. It's a special order.
The door closes crooked and leaves a gap on one side. What is that?
Often an uneven floor or a cable that's stretched on one side. I'll check both and balance the door. Don't try to adjust the cables yourself.
How long does it take you to get to Kensington?
About 5 minutes. Kensington is right next to my base in Normal Heights.
Is my house in a historic district? Does that matter for a new door?
Kensington has many city-designated historic homes. If yours is one, a new door may need a style review. Repairs don't. I'll help you check before you order anything.
