Garage door opener repair in Kensington
Right next door to my base. Low garages tucked into the slope and heavy wood doors both make openers work hard, and both have a fix.

Kensington opener stopped working?
The motor clicks but won't lift, the door stops and goes back up, or it moves a few inches and gives up. For garage door opener repair in Kensington, call me at (619) 930-7869. On a heavy wood door, that's often the opener telling you it's lifting more than it should.
Kensington's streets follow a narrow mesa with steep slopes on three sides, so a lot of garages are tucked below the street, under part of the house or into the hillside. Low ceilings are common. A ceiling-mount opener in a garage like that can hang at forehead height. A truly low garage needs low-headroom track first, and I carry it, then I'll tell you which opener fits. On a standard door, a side-mount (jackshaft) LiftMaster sits on the torsion bar beside the door and leaves the ceiling clear. It's a special order.
What I check first
- 1
Diagnose
I pull the release and lift the door by hand. If it's heavy or drifts, the springs come first. Then the gear, trolley, sensors, limits, board, outlet and remotes, in that order.
- 2
Explain
I show you the part that failed, tell you whether repairing it makes sense for the age of your unit, and give you the price before I start. If it's close, you get both prices.
- 3
Repair
Part from the truck, limits and force reset, sensors aligned, remotes and keypad programmed, then I run the door with you watching and test the auto-reverse.
Why openers struggle in Kensington
Heavy doors. Wood doors on the late-1920s Spanish Revival homes here weigh a lot more than steel, and when the spring is weak, the opener makes up the difference. The plastic drive gear wears out, then the motor. I check the balance first, because a new opener on a bad spring won't last.
Tight spaces. In a garage cut into a slope, there's often no room for the long rail of a ceiling-mount opener, or there's a beam in the way. Low-headroom track handles the clearance, and I'll tell you what opener works with it. When there's no room for a standard rail, I install Marantec. A side-mount (jackshaft) opener isn't the fix there: it needs standard-radius track, and on low-headroom track it won't close the door all the way. On a standard door, though, it frees the ceiling and runs quiet, since nothing hangs from the joists.
Outages. If the power drops while the car is inside, an opener with no battery leaves you lifting a heavy wood door by hand. Every LiftMaster I install has battery backup, as California law has required since 2019.

What I leave you with
Opener mounted beside the door or overhead, springs balanced so it isn't straining, sensors tested, and a battery that keeps it working when the power goes.
Spring snapped? I can usually come today or tomorrow.

Kensington opener questions
What's a side-mount opener, and do I need one?
It mounts on the wall beside the door and turns the torsion bar directly, so there's no rail on the ceiling, and it's quiet. It needs standard-radius track, so it suits standard doors, not low-headroom setups. It's also the most expensive type and a special order. I'll tell you what fits your garage.
Can an opener handle my heavy wood door?
Yes, if the springs are doing their job. The opener should only guide the door. I'll balance the springs first, then pick the opener. For a big wood carriage-house door of 500 or 600 pounds, I special-order a heavy-duty LiftMaster built for that weight.
My opener runs but the door barely moves. What's wrong?
Usually a stripped gear or a door that's out of balance. Both are fixable. Please don't keep running it.
Do you install openers on historic homes?
Yes. Openers go inside the garage and don't change the outside look of the house or door.
Faster by phone. This works too.
