Opener quit in Normal Heights?

The opener hums and nothing moves, or the remote works one day and not the next. For garage door opener repair in Normal Heights, call me at (619) 930-7869. Tell me what it's doing and roughly how old it is. Since I'm based here, I can usually come the same day and test it in person instead of guessing over the phone.

A lot of homes here are older bungalows with a detached garage, and the openers in them have been around a long time. I still find chain drives from before 1993, when federal rules started requiring openers to reverse when something is in the way. Those don't have the photo-eye sensors at the bottom of the track. If yours doesn't, I'll be honest: replacing it is the safer move.

What I check first

  1. 1

    Diagnose

I pull the release and lift the door by hand. If it's heavy or drifts, the springs come first. Then the gear, trolley, sensors, limits, board, outlet and remotes, in that order.

  2. 2

    Explain

I show you the part that failed, tell you whether repairing it makes sense for the age of your unit, and give you the price before I start. If it's close, you get both prices.

  3. 3

    Repair

Part from the truck, limits and force reset, sensors aligned, remotes and keypad programmed, then I run the door with you watching and test the auto-reverse.

What goes wrong with openers here

Age is first. Gears strip, logic boards fail and old remotes stop being made. Some older units just need one part, and I'll tell you if yours is one of them. If the motor is from the 80s or 90s, though, putting new parts in an old box rarely pays off.

Shared doors are second. In the apartment courts around Adams Park and Cherokee Park, several people use one opener with different remotes and a keypad by the door. More users means more cycles and more chances somebody loses a remote. I can wipe the old codes and program fresh ones so former tenants can't get in.

Power outages are third. If the power goes out and your opener has no battery, you're pulling the red release cord and lifting by hand. California has required battery backup on new residential openers since 2019 under SB 969. Every LiftMaster I install has one.

Normal Heights opener questions

My opener has no sensors. Is that legal?

Existing openers aren't required to be upgraded, but one with no sensors can close on someone without stopping. I'd replace it, especially with kids or pets around.

Can you reprogram our keypad so old tenants can't open the garage?

Yes. I clear every remote and keypad code and set up new ones. It takes a few minutes.

Do I need a battery backup?

Any new opener installed in California since 2019 must have one. For an older opener, it's not required, but it's what lets you get the car out when the power's down.

How fast can you get here?

I'm based in Normal Heights, so it's a short drive. Callback within the hour, and same-day service is common.
