Door crooked or hanging out of the track?

Garage door off track repair isn't something to fix with a hammer and a strong friend. If one side of the door is higher than the other, rollers have popped out of the track, or the door stopped halfway and won't go either way, stop using it, unplug the opener and call me at (619) 930-7869. A door that's out of its track can drop or swing without warning.

Getting the rollers back in is the easy part. The real job is figuring out why they came out, because a door doesn't leave the track on its own. Something hit it, something broke, or something has been wearing for a long time. If I only fix the symptom, you'll call me again next month.

What does it look like?

Describe it on the phone, or text me a photo from a safe distance.

One side lower than the other

Usually a cable has snapped or come off its drum. The door is hanging on one side.

Rollers out of the track

Bent track, worn rollers or a hit from a car or bumper. The door may jam at that spot.

Door stuck halfway

It won't go up or down. Don't force it. That's when doors fall.

Panels bowing or a hinge cracked

The door twisted as it came out. Hinges and panel ends take the strain.

Opener kept pushing

If the opener drove the door while it was binding, the rail or trolley may be bent too.

What I check first

  1. 1

    Diagnose

I secure the door before I touch anything. Then I check the cables and drums, both springs, every roller, the hinges, the track brackets and the opener, to find what pushed it out.

  2. 2

    Explain

I show you the cause, whether it's a broken cable, a bent track section or worn rollers, and give you the price for the whole fix before I start.

  3. 3

    Repair

Rollers back in the track, bent sections straightened or replaced, tracks set plumb and parallel, worn parts swapped, the door balanced and the opener's limits reset.

What I fix on an off-track door

The track, and whatever knocked the door out of it.

Track realignment

Loose brackets tightened, tracks set plumb and at the right spacing from the door.

Bent track sections

Straightened when they can be, replaced when the metal is creased.

Worn or broken rollers

Swapped for sealed-bearing rollers that run quieter and hold the track better.

Cables and drums

A snapped or slipped cable is the usual reason a door goes crooked.

Hinges and panel ends

Cracked hinges replaced so the door bends at the joints instead of the panels.

Repair the door or replace it?

Almost every off-track door can be repaired. Track, rollers, hinges and cables are all replaceable parts, and once the door is back in line and balanced, it runs like it did before.

The door itself is a different story if a car hit it hard. If a steel panel is folded or a wood section has split along its length, I'll tell you whether one panel can be replaced or whether the door is done. Single panels for older doors aren't always available. In that case I'll quote the repair and a new door side by side so you can compare.

Spring snapped? I can usually come today or tomorrow.

Please don't try to force it back

An off-track door is often being held up by one cable, one spring or a bent piece of track. Pulling on it, pushing it with the opener or trying to tap the rollers back in can bring the whole door down. Doors weigh 150 pounds or more, and wood doors weigh much more.

Keep cars, kids and pets out from under it. Unplug the opener so nobody presses the button by habit. If the cables are loose or the springs look broken, keep your hands off those too. They hold a lot of tension, and that part is my job.

Off-track questions

Can I still open the door to get my car out?

Not safely. If the door is crooked or a roller is out of the track, moving it can bring it down. Call me first. If you really have to get out, tell me and I'll talk you through what's safe to do and what isn't.

Why did my door come off the track?

The common causes are a car or bumper hitting the track, a cable snapping or slipping off its drum, rollers worn so badly they slip out, and loose track brackets. An opener pushing a binding door can make any of those worse.

Do you have to replace the whole track?

Usually not. Most of the time I straighten it or replace one bent section. If the vertical track is creased or the brackets are torn out of the frame, I'll show you before I quote it.

Is it safe to leave it overnight?

If it's fully down and not hanging, leave it alone and unplug the opener. If it's up or stuck partway, keep everyone out from under it and call me so I can get it secured, usually today or tomorrow.

Can a car-damaged door be saved?

Often, if the damage is to the track or one panel. A door that's folded across several sections usually isn't worth fixing. I'll give you both options and you decide.
