About 20 minutes east on the 8 from Normal Heights. Torsion and extension springs ride on the truck, so a La Mesa spring is usually fixed the same day.

Snapped spring in La Mesa?
If you heard a bang and now the door won't lift, or the opener hums and gives up after a few inches, that's a spring. Leave the door down, unplug the opener and call me at (619) 930-7869. I'll ask a couple of questions, give you a window, and bring the right spring the first time.
A lot of La Mesa's houses went up in the building boom after World War II: ranch homes with two-car attached garages and wide, heavy sectional doors, many of them wood. Those doors need properly sized springs, and plenty are running on whatever was on the shelf the last time someone fixed them. I measure the old spring and the door before I match it.
What I check first
- 1
Diagnose
I look at the whole door, not just the broken part: springs, cables, drums, rollers, hinges, track and the opener. On a spring job I measure the old spring: wire size, length, inside diameter and wind.
- 2
Explain
I show you what broke and why, then give you the price before I touch anything. Say no and I pack up. No trip fee, no pressure.
- 3
Repair
A spring sized to your door, from the truck. I balance the door, run it through full cycles, reset the opener's force limits and lube the moving parts before I leave.
Why springs wear out in La Mesa
Springs are rated in cycles, not years, and heat takes a bite out of that number. La Mesa sits far enough inland to run noticeably hotter than the coast on summer afternoons and cool down at night. A garage that faces west and bakes every afternoon puts the steel through that swing day after day.
Door weight is the bigger factor. A two-car wood door is heavy, and every pound is work for the spring. An undersized spring, which I see often on older La Mesa doors, wears out early and leaves the opener doing lifting it was never built for.
Hillside streets toward Mount Helix and around Grossmont add one more wrinkle: garages cut into a slope often have low headroom, which calls for different track and spring hardware. I keep it on the truck.

What a finished spring job looks like
New spring, new bearings if they were worn, cables seated on the drums, and the door balanced so it stays put halfway. That's what you're paying for.
Spring snapped? I can usually come today or tomorrow.

La Mesa spring questions
How fast can you get to La Mesa for a broken spring?
Usually the same day if you call in the morning, otherwise the next. La Mesa is 15 to 20 minutes from Normal Heights.
Does the heat really matter for springs?
It does. Heat cycling fatigues the steel. A west-facing garage in La Mesa goes through springs faster than a shaded one near the beach. A light oiling twice a year helps.
My garage is cut into the hill and the ceiling is low. Is that a problem?
No. Low-headroom garages are common on La Mesa's hillside streets. I carry the track and brackets for them.
Will you replace both springs?
If you have two and one broke, I'll recommend both and quote it both ways. Your call.
Faster by phone. This works too.
Tell me what's going on and I'll call you back with what I think it is. Free estimate, no trip fee.
