Garage door opener repair in Escondido

Openers in Escondido work in some of the hottest garages in the county. I bring gear kits, sensors and a LiftMaster on the truck so one trip up the 15 does it.

Opener quit on you in Escondido?

Motor runs but the door doesn't move? Door starts down and pops back up? Remote works from the driveway but not the street? Those are the calls I get most for garage door opener repair in Escondido. Call (619) 930-7869, tell me the brand and what it's doing, and I'll bring the parts that fit it.

Since I'm 30 to 45 minutes out, I don't guess. I'll ask for the model sticker on the motor head, and if you can send a photo, even better. Most opener fixes take under an hour once I'm there.

What I check first

  1. 1

    Diagnose

I pull the release and lift the door by hand. If it's heavy or drifts, the springs come first. Then the gear, trolley, sensors, limits, board, outlet and remotes, in that order.

  2. 2

    Explain

I show you the part that failed, tell you whether repairing it makes sense for the age of your unit, and give you the price before I start. If it's close, you get both prices.

  3. 3

    Repair

Part from the truck, limits and force reset, sensors aligned, remotes and keypad programmed, then I run the door with you watching and test the auto-reverse.

Why openers give out in Escondido

Heat is hard on the inside of an opener. Many chain- and screw-drive units use a plastic or nylon drive gear, and a garage that sits near 100 degrees on a summer afternoon softens it a little every day. Eventually the teeth strip, and you hear the motor hum with nothing happening. Escondido's August highs average close to 90 outside, and a closed garage runs hotter.

A lot of Escondido homes went up from the 1970s on, and many still have a builder opener or its first replacement. Those circuit boards and capacitors don't love heat either. If the motor is sound, a gear kit or a new board is a fair repair. If it's an old unit with no photo-eye sensors, I'll recommend a new one.

When I do replace an opener, it's a LiftMaster with a battery backup. California's SB 969 has required that on new residential openers sold since July 2019, so the door still opens when the power is out.

Here's what a worn drive gear looks like next to a new one. The motor was fine; the gear was the whole problem.

Escondido opener questions

My opener hums but the door won't move. Is it the motor?

Usually not. In a hot Escondido garage, it's most often a stripped drive gear. That's a repair, not a replacement.

Do I have to get a battery backup if I replace my opener?

Any new residential opener sold in California since July 2019 has to have one under SB 969. The LiftMaster units I install come with it.

Will you drive up from San Diego just for an opener?

Yes. No trip fee to Escondido. I group North County calls, so give me a little room on the time and I'll give you a tight afternoon window.

Can you add a keypad or phone control to my old opener?

Often. Many openers take a universal keypad. If yours is too old for that, a new LiftMaster has Wi-Fi built in.

Is it worth fixing a 20-year-old opener?

Sometimes. If the motor's strong and it has working sensors, a gear or board makes sense. I'll give you both prices and let you pick.
